Dazaifu tenmangu shrine is said to be the setting of a passage in manyoshu (collection of ten thousand leaves), which became the source of the new era name "reiwa". It is a shrine dedicated to the divine spirit of michizane sugawara.
It is also known as the god of learning, sincerity, and protection against evil, and about 10 million people visit every year.
Plants that color the precincts throughout the year such as about 6,000 plum trees, about 30,000 irises, and a large camphor tree that is over 1,500 years old are also one of the highlights. Be sure to try the famous "umegae mochi" freshly baked on the approach to the shrine!
